Sapphire vs. Mineral vs. Hardlex: Watch Crystals Explained
The crystal protects your dial — but sapphire, mineral and Seiko's Hardlex behave very differently. Here's what each means for scratches and value.

The “crystal” is the clear cover over your watch dial, and the material it’s made of has a real impact on durability, clarity and price. Here’s how the three you’ll meet most often compare.
Mineral crystal
Mineral glass is hardened glass, common on budget watches. It resists scratches better than acrylic but far less than sapphire, and it can chip. The upside: it’s cheap and relatively easy to replace. If you see an inexpensive watch, assume mineral unless stated otherwise.
Hardlex (Seiko’s mineral)
Hardlex is Seiko’s proprietary hardened mineral crystal, found on many Seiko 5 and entry Prospex models. It’s tougher than standard mineral and very shatter- resistant — part of why Seikos take abuse so well — but it still scratches more easily than sapphire. Many enthusiasts happily live with Hardlex; others upgrade.
Sapphire crystal
Sapphire is synthetic sapphire, second only to diamond in everyday hardness. It’s extremely scratch-resistant — realistically scratch-proof in normal use — and the mark of a more premium watch. The trade-offs: it’s costlier, can shatter under a sharp impact, and benefits from anti-reflective coating to cut glare.
Quick comparison
| Scratch resistance | Shatter resistance | Cost | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mineral | Low–medium | Medium | Low |
| Hardlex | Medium | High | Low |
| Sapphire | Very high | Medium | Higher |
Which should you care about?
- Want it to look flawless for years? Prioritize sapphire.
- Buying budget and a bit rough on watches? Hardlex’s shatter resistance is reassuring.
- Modding a Seiko? A sapphire upgrade is one of the most popular first mods.
The bottom line
Sapphire is the gold standard for scratch resistance, Hardlex is a tough and practical middle ground, and mineral is the budget baseline. Know what’s on your watch — and factor a sapphire upgrade into the cost if longevity matters to you.
